The Girl of the Golden West

The Girl of the Golden West
After the success of his opera Madame Butterfly , Puccini returned to the source of its inspiration, David Belasco. Belasco, playwright for Madame Butterfly had also written The Girl of the Golden West, and Puccini selected that drama for his next opera. This opera was the first World premiere premiere for the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. It went on to be a huge success all over the United States. The Opera is set in California during the 1849 Gold Rush. Minnie the camp girl has fallen in love with Dick Johnson, who is really Ramerrez, a notorious bandit who is being hunted by Sheriff Jack Rance. In the scene, Dick Johnson has entered the bar and having ordered a drink, is joined by Minnie. Sheriff Jack Rance is at the bar becoming increasingly jealous.
